On Day 1 in the Scratch Competition, the reigning Champion Chris Royl found himself under pressure. A fine round by Kim Meguer saw him on top (72) on countback from Chris. Martyn Phillips would finish the first day 3rd (79). The Handicap Competition was equally well poised: both John Moorman and Reg Miller carding 82, for a net 57 with Peter Dixcey 3rd 61 net. Day 2 saw a robust effort from Chris in the Scratch, shooting a 73 to retain the title. Kim’s brave effort would see him claim 2nd place, with Martyn Phillips securing a fairly untroubled 3rd place. In the Handicap, John Moorman (61) secured the title, the only Player under par on both days. A level par 62 net brought Trevor Gosset up from 5th to 2nd Place. with Martyn Phillips making the biggest move 61 net catapulting him form 10th to 3rd. August Shield: Foggy conditions briefly threatened the August Shield. Rapidly improving weather saw play start on time, but early damp and fluctuating winds contrived to make play difficult. Nikki Glasgow and Helen Whittaker managed the conditions the best, coming in with 67pts from the middle of the field. Early boys Philip Spreckley and John Moorman would be runners-up with 65pts, 3rd Place would come from the last group, Darren Abbott and Martyn Phillips 64pts. Results: 8th, 9th August Senior Championship: Scratch: 1 Chris Royl 145 (72,73), 2 Kim Meguer 149 (72,77), 3 Martyn Phillips 153 (79,74). ANN SMITH AND PAT LONG WIN FRESHWATER BAY GOLF CLUB’S WHEATLEY TROPHIES
Freshwater Bay Golf Club ladies ventured out to play for the John Wheatley trophies in extremely challenging conditions. The winners on the day were Ann Smith and Pat Long, pictured with lady Captain Sheila Richard .
