WightFibre has successfully laid a new fibre optic cable across the River Yar as part of an ultra-fast ring around the West Wight connecting Yarmouth, Freshwater, Totland and Brightstone to WightFibre’s new network.
The full-fibre Gigabit Island rollout continues at pace with full-fibre broadband service now available to over 30,000 homes and businesses on the Island.
The latest milestone saw WightFibre lay a new fibre optic cable across the River Yar in Yarmouth. Laying this fibre, although only a short distance, has been a major undertaking for the Cowes-based company, but paves the way for work to commence in Freshwater and Yarmouth in the coming months.
Care for the environment and the local natural habitats were a primary concern with a number of reports required. Various permissions were required from private landowners, the Isle of Wight Council, the Maritime Management Organisation and Crown Estates. Close liaison with Natural England has ensured that work is being done outside of breeding and nesting times for wildlife and any potential environmental impact mitigated.
The laying of the cable was carried out by WightFibre and RS Divers, assisted by Verevo Nexus Fibre Solutions.
John Irvine, WightFibre’s Chief Executive Officer, has said:
“WightFibre has made great progress in building the UK’s first Gigabit Island on the Isle of Wight, having already made full-fibre broadband available to over 30,000 premises.
Article continues below this advertisement “The West Wight is often an after-thought in major infrastructure projects, but from the outset WightFibre has always planned to include West Wight in our rollout. This short cable under the River Yar is a major component of our rollout so that we have two routes to West Wight. This will ensure we can provide the most reliable service possible.
“By the end of 2022 over 90% of homes in West Wight will be able to receive WightFibre full-fibre broadband”.
All a Gov plan to eventually curb private car ownership for the masses, and once full 5G is avaiable everywhere they will introduce driverless electric cabs to replace all but the rich owning a car giving them free roads once more.
You will call up the driverless cab and pay for it on your phone, it will collect you after you enter a pin code, drop you off then go onto the next customer. It will charge itself in out of town charging bays and will cut down on countless cars used to take people to work, then left for 8 hours all day, and even longer at night cluttering up roads.

Had several letters from Wightfibre saying they are installing cable in Park Road/Monkton Street Ryde. 3 years on still no sign of it.
Oh lucky you. Why shouldn’t you have to put up with the chaos that these people cause as well.
And watch out West Wight, chaos and grid lock on its way. Do NOT expect anyone actually doing any work 95% of the time because they won’t.
