55-year-old Wayne Sadler, who died after being seriously injured whilst working as a waste operative in Ryde, became trapped in the bin lorry’s machinery, an inquest opening has heard.
Mr Sadler, of Broadway in Sandown, died at Southampton General Hospital on 10th August following a serious incident on Spencer Road, Ryde, on 29th July.
It was at 13:20 that emergency services were called to the scene, with the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance scrambled to provide enhanced pre-hospital intervention.
Senior Coroner for the Isle of Wight, Caroline Sumeray, today (Monday) opened and adjourned an inquest into the death.
It is now known that the 55-year-old Council worker, orignally from Birmingham, was emptying the bins of local residents when he suddenly became trapped within the machinery at the back of the lorry.
Sadly, despite the efforts of medics, Mr Sadler died in the early hours of 10th August, as reported by Island Echo. His cause of death has been established as multiple injuries due to major trauma.
The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed that it is working ‘openly and transparently’ with the Health and Safety Executive as investigations into the fatal incident continue.

What reason could he possibly have had for being in the crushing mechanism?
He was emptying a bin at the back of the lorry, NOT in the crush. Can we wait for the HSE report before deciding where he was or wasn’t and try to consider the family who will be desperately seeking answers and may cling onto any theories offered without actual knowledge.
