A man who was found in his vehicle back in 2021 died from carbon monoxide poisoning after lighting a disposable barbecue inside, an inquest has concluded.
Marc Lee Hooper, 48, was discovered at around 10:40 on 31st May 2021 in his black Mitsubishi, which had been parked on a track off Down Lane in Ventnor.
Inside the vehicle, emergency services found the remnants of a burnt-out disposable barbecue on the passenger seat and an empty bottle of wine.
Lighting the barbecue resulted in a fatal buildup of carbon monoxide.
The Isle of Wight’s Senior Coroner, Caroline Sumeray, has now, nearly 4 years after the death, formally concluded that Mr Hooper killed himself.
Rather than holding a full inquest hearing, the matter was dealt with under Section 9C of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, which allows the coroner to reach a conclusion ‘in writing’ when the circumstances of death are clear and uncontested.
The official cause of death was given as carbon monoxide poisoning.
Mr Hooper, a welder, was born in Walthamstow and was living on the High Street, Ventnor at the time of his death.

Four years after his death the coroner formally concluded! That’s a long time for this to be finalised, poor family. RIP, fly free amongst the angels X
Has nobody questioned the length of time families are made to wait ? This Coroner is obviously failing.
