Youth teams from Vectis RFC were in action on the mainland over a waterlogged weekend that highlighted the club’s rapid growth, resilience and expanding player base.
With grass pitches across the Island unplayable, fixtures were salvaged thanks to 4G and 3G surfaces, allowing two Vectis squads to travel and compete, while other age groups continued training locally.
Under 15s – A squad reborn
The Vectis U15s travelled to Portsmouth to face US Heathens in a tight, physical contest, narrowly losing 5–0.
Despite the result, the match marked a major milestone for the squad.
Just 12 months ago, the age group struggled to field a full team. This time, Vectis travelled with a squad of 21 players, supported by 21 parents on the touchline. The group included complete newcomers to rugby, alongside players taking advantage of cancelled football fixtures to pull on a Vectis shirt.
Josh was named Player of the Match following a standout performance in a determined defensive effort.
Under 10s – Energy and enthusiasm at Havant
Vectis U10s enjoyed a lively and positive morning at Havant RFC, taking part in a friendly round-robin played in a non-competitive format that prioritised development and game time.
The Islanders showed high energy and total commitment throughout, with 2 brand-new players making their debuts and integrating seamlessly into the squad. The focus remained firmly on enjoyment, confidence and learning.
Volunteer and coaches information day
Away from the pitch, Vectis RFC is inviting the local community to a Volunteer and Coaches Information Day, taking place at Network Ryde on Saturday, 7th February, from 10:00–12:00.
The relaxed, no-pressure event is open to anyone interested in supporting youth rugby, whether as a coach, volunteer, former player or parent with no previous rugby experience. Attendees will have the chance to meet committee members, learn about available roles and find out how the club supports volunteers with training and development.
Vectis RFC focuses on helping young people aged 5–18 build confidence, teamwork and athletic skills through rugby on the Isle of Wight. Refreshments will be provided, and those interested can simply turn up on the day or get in touch via the club’s social media channels.
Vectis RFC is a youth-only club, providing rugby opportunities for young people aged 5–18 on the Isle of Wight, and supporting the Island’s senior clubs – Isle of Wight RFC, Ventnor RFC and Sandown & Shanklin RFC.
