Vectis RFC have returned to action after a winter of frozen pitches, with youth sides battling through mud and rain as competitive rugby resumes across the Island.
With the weather finally relenting, Vectis’ youth and junior sections wasted no time in pulling on their boots again, delivering a weekend that showcased not only competitive rugby but also the resilience and spirit that runs through the club.
COLTS DIG DEEP IN TOUGH PETERSFIELD TEST
The Vectis Colts endured a tough afternoon away at Petersfield, suffering their first league loss of the season in testing conditions.
Heavy rain, freezing temperatures and a churned-up pitch set the tone for a physical encounter, with the hosts using close-quarter rugby to full effect as they ran out 33–12 winners.
Despite the scoreline, Vectis produced several bright attacking moments. Jack Coates was a constant threat with ball in hand, while George Cowell was named Player of the Match for his powerful running and defensive work.
Vectis’ two tries were scored by John Waghorn, with Preston Williams adding a conversion. The Islanders will be confident of putting in a stronger showing when the sides meet again in the return fixture later in the season.
UNDER-13S SHOW HEART AGAINST STRONG HAVANT
The Vectis Under-13s were also in action, hosting Havant RFC at Sandown & Shanklin RFC in what proved to be a stern test against a strong and well-drilled visiting side.
Despite a 9–1 defeat, the performance was full of heart and determination. Havant were clinical when chances arose, but Vectis’ defence stood firm for large periods, producing several outstanding goal-line stands to prevent the score from becoming more lopsided.
The Islanders competed well at the breakdown and made good ground through committed ball-carrying, with the match remaining evenly contested for long spells.
Conditions deteriorated further in the final 20 minutes as torrential rain swept across the pitch, but Vectis continued to battle to the final whistle. Edward Foster crossed for Vectis’ try and was deservedly named Player of the Match by the Havant coaches.
