The driver of a Fiat van has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after crashing into several parked cars in Newport tonight (Saturday).
Police are currently on scene at Castle Road, where 3 vehicles – a Vauxhall Zafira, a Skoda Fabia and an Audi A3 – have sustained significant damage after being hit by the large red van.
The incident occurred shortly before 21:30 as the van travelled up Castle Road. The driver’s side of the vehicle sustained impact damage before then ploughing into the parked cars on the left hand side, ripping the front wheel to a right angle.
Skid marks are evident where the van driver continued for a short distance up the road before coming to a grinding halt.
Island Echo understands 1 male has been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the prescribed limit and has been taken into custody at Newport Police Station.
The road is closed whilst recovery is arranged.
UPDATE @ 10:00 – 27-year-old Marcus Bienek of Royal Exchange in Newport has been charged with drink driving following last night’s crash.
He has been bailed to appear before Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on 14th December.
