Firefighters forced entry to a home in Newport this afternoon (Tuesday) when a sounding alarm alerted neighbours to an incident developing in the kitchen.
2 appliances from Newport were mobilised to Portland Street shortly before 15:00 following reports of a fire alarm having activated.
Crews swiftly arrived on scene to find the kitchen filled with steam – and no answer at the door.
Entry was forced, and the source of the incident was identified.
It was soon established that a pot left unattended on the stove had led to the alarm.
Firefighters made the scene safe and carried out a Home Fire Safety Visit with the occupant to provide advice and ensure no further risk.
Cooking fires are one of the leading causes of house fires. Stay safe in the kitchen by following these essential tips:
- CLEAR – Keep tea towels, cloths, and cables away from the oven and hob.
- OVEN – Turn off the oven and hob after cooking and remove hot pans.
- OIL – Clean up grease and oil regularly to prevent fires.
- KEEP – Stay in the kitchen while cooking—don’t leave it unattended!
