Two crews from Newport Fire Station were dispatched to the scene on Lushington Hill at around 12:15 to reports of an outbuilding fire.
Eyewitnesses have described to Island Echo how loud explosions could be heard, believed to be that of gas bottles stored in the shed-like building.
The road remains open this afternoon however delays are building up in the area. Firefighters are drawing water from a nearby hydrant in the middle of the road, meaning motorists are having to pass over a water hose.
Police are on the scene.
