A Dogue de Bordeaux could face destruction after its owner was sentenced for an attack that left a care worker with life-changing facial injuries in Freshwater.
Jason Turner, 52, of Lugley Street in Newport, appeared before the Isle of Wight Crown Court last week after pleading guilty – on a basis – to being in charge of a dangerously out of control dog that caused injury, contrary to the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
His dog, Winnie, launched the attack on 21st July 2024 at The Gouldings in Freshwater, seriously injuring a care worker. She sustained significant injuries to the lower part of her mouth, described in court as life-changing.
Winnie, a large Dogue de Bordeaux, had previously been involved in 2 other biting incidents. Turner was already aware of the need for the dog to be muzzled but failed to take proper precautions.
The court imposed a 33-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months. Turner must complete 15 rehabilitation activity days and will be supervised throughout the suspended sentence period.
A contingent destruction order was made in relation to Winnie. The court ruled that the dog can remain with Turner only under strict conditions of proper control. Failure to comply could result in the dog being destroyed.
In addition, Turner has been ordered to pay £1,200 in compensation to the victim. The sum will be paid in £50 monthly instalments.

Good God are they serious.
So how many times does this vicious dog need to bit someone before it is deemed unsafe. If that was a child it may well have been killed.
These judges are unfit to practice.
Its ridicules that this person was given such a menial penalty when he is responsible for his dangerous dog and did nothing !!
It needs to go it’s obviously dangerous & vicious no need for these type here.
So the man allows a potentially killer dog to be out of control and muzzle free, and after three attacks (one of them a traumatic savaging of a human) he is allowed to keep it? Is it me or is this utter insanity? Who are these people who make these inexplicable decisions?
It’s a dog who attacks again & again & it needs to be put down before it kills
If the owner is too stupid to follow simple orders like it to be muzzled then destroy the owner.
