Travel chaos is expected on the other side of the Solent this morning (Thursday) as a result of Police closing the main road outside Red Funnel’s terminal in Southampton – just as thousands of people descend on the Island for the Isle of Wight Festival.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary say they are currently dealing with an ‘incident’ along Town Quay. There are reports of fallen power cables.
Due to the nature of the incident, the Police say that they have had to close Town Quay from Bugle Street to High Street.
It’s unclear at this early stage whether access is still possible to both the vehicle ferry and Red Jet terminals; but disruption is expected in any eventuality with lengthy queues in the city.
This will undoubtedly affect those leaving the Island too and may cause delays to the published ferry timetables.
Motorists are being advised to avoid the area if at all possible, but today marks 1 of the busiest days for cross-Solent operator Red Funnel as Festival revellers descend at the start of this year’s Isle of Wight Festival.
UPDATE @ 08:13 – It is understood that a crash involving a lorry has brought power cables down across the carriageway – the A33.
UPDATE @ 08:32 – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that the road has now re-opened.
However, Red Funnel is running with 10-20 minute delays due to an earlier medical emergency.
UPDATE @ 10:05 – Police have confirmed that the driver involved – a man in his 40s was taken to Southampton General Hospital.
Enquiries remain ongoing into the exact circumstances of the incident.
UPDATE @ 12:30 – Red Funnel has confirmed that they are now running back to timetable and are experiencing no delays.

Some old fart causing trouble again
I don’t think it was wind, he’s up to his neck in it!!
What the hell is wrong with you ? Doesn’t anyone have any respect for the older generation anymore. !!!!!
Nope! Not when their dawdling along at 20mph holding me up I don’t, ban the lot of em, we need to speed this island up!
That’s a very typical narcissist comment if ever I read one.
Best ignored. Completely self obsessed . Parents must be very proud. Although I expect they get their stupidity from somewhere.
Actually we should pity then. They miss so much beauty in the world with such a small mind and intellect.
His needle is stuck in the same groove he just does it for attention does poor old “Stuey” otherwise nobody would ever take any notice of him
Fedup stop smoking pot please
The article clearly states the crash involved a lorry bringing down power cables. I cannot imagine an elderly person would be driving the lorry!!!!
You’re right. If people read the whole article, they’d clearly see it states that man in his 40’s crashed. The red funnel delay was caused by medical emg on board. Two totally separate incidents.
Time to get a life Stuart. One day, all being well, you’ll be old. But first you have to grow up!
Dirty Druggys like you will never be an old fart, so keep eating processed crappie foods, and keep taking whatever your taking…..you will be helping the climate..
Far from an “Old Fart”, it was actually a young man who had a heart attack and has subsequently passed away. How inane are you?
Like Stuart said some old fart
Yeah, Haven’t you got anything better to post?
The update to the report says “….the driver involved – a man in his 40s……”
So I would suggest that you don’t make assumptions without having the full facts.
You are likely to have your comment turned back on yourself. “…causing trouble again”
Old farts everywhere all Need to be put down
Hope the driver is ok
10-20 min delays. That is on time in Red Funnel world
Hope the drivers ok? Who cares if people miss the ferry, life is more important
