
UPDATED: Roads and businesses are flooding, trains are suspended and drivers are facing difficult driving conditions this afternoon (Wednesday) as torrential rain lashes down across the Isle of Wight.
Island Line has been suspended in both directions between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin this afternoon due to a flooded line. On the roads, Marsh Road in Gurnard and Harding Shute in Ryde have been closed by Island Roads as both have become impassable.
Blackwater Road, Newport and Yarmouth Road, Shalfleet have high levels of surface water, with adverse conditions across all of the Island’s roads. Golf Links Road, Sandown is said to be almost impassable.
In Wootton, The Sloop has closed its doors to customers due to flooding.
A weather warning remains in force until 18:00, meaning more rain could well fall on the saturated ground as the afternoon continues, although the heavy rain is anticipated to clear as the evening progresses. A flood alert his also in place for the River Yar, with out of bank flooding expected later on tonight.
UPDATE @ 18:20 – Island Line trains have resumed a normal service between Ryde and Shanklin.
UPDATE @ 19:00 – Island Roads have implemented an emergency road closure on Thorley Rd (B3401) due to deep flooding. Motorists are being told to not attempt passing the flood.
