‘Nuisance parking’ on a road in Ryde has been described as a ‘serious accident waiting to happen’ by 1 local resident, who says that leaving his property is almost impossible.
Tim Leal says that parking on Appley Rise has become problematic, especially when parents collect children from the nearby schools or on hot beach days when visitors leave their cars all day.
It’s become so bad that exiting driveways is impossible at times, according to Mr Leal.
Tim says:
“The answers I have received from all parties so far is along the lines of ‘we can’t do anything, it is someone else’s decision, call the police, we have a newsletter’. Nothing really to solve the situation.
“Most days children cross in between parked cars straight out into the narrow road with driver’s views blocked by all the cars. Today I heard parents scream in terror as their child walked out into the road without looking. This is a serious accident waiting to happen.
“It has got worse over the years as the verge has gradually been worn away and now looks inviting to park on for short periods”.
The concerned resident adds:
“Perhaps together we can all solve this problem. Either yellow lines, large rocks to prevent parking, bollards, digging up the verge for planting or a road marshal.
“As for where parents can park – what’s wrong with walking? Even a couple of streets away where the parking is not dangerous. And soon the car park will re-open at Appley. This is a very short walk”.
Come to Great Preston Road ,to get off our driveway is like taking your life in your hands , can’t see anything to the right of us because of constant van parking . The cars go so fast down this road ,just waiting for us to have accident. Asked council for double yellow lines ,but nothing been done ,they don’t want to know .
Double yellow lines waste of time we have them 9 years only one ticket issued? Cars vans all the time struggle to get in and out of drive council don’t send anyone around
Isle of Wight Roads have no Health and Safety
Drive past McDonald’s in Ryde is a Death Trap
THERE IS NO TRAFFIC CONTROL ON THE ISLAND
The Council are useless
Bob Seeley does not even live on the Island and does not have a clue,
Unless a Barbecue invite is offered to him
Carolyn
So many idiots Park vans on pavements making it dangerous for other motorists and pedestrians to walk safely on pavements
IW Council lack Safety Brains
All they are good for are charging expensive Council Taxes on the Island
It would help if the council would put affordable carparks around instead of ripping everyone off
Its not rocket science
Make parking affordable then most of the problem solved.
The affordable parking happens all over the UK but here is just a ripoff.
Affordable car parks are not the answer to parking problems around schools which this story is about. The reason that cars are left blocking people in, fully parked on pavements or grass verges, double-yellow lines, or dangerously on corners, is simply because these people are too lazy to walk. And they don’t care about the inconvenience this causes to residents.
Other countries have much better organised systems of pick up and drop off points at schools which are properly marshalled. And safety is taken seriously.
Personally I would have a public clamping service. Would sort it out in no time and money used for road safety.
We’ve been trying to get something done at Culver Way in Yaverland for years. It’s OK during the Winter but at times during the Summer there’s no room for the bus or emergency vehicles to drive up the hill. No one wants to take responsibility, all it needs is two yellow lines on one side of the road but no one will do anything.
Yellow lines won’t help that is just selfish talk
Public roads means just that.
If the council didn’t rip people off with over priced parking it would help.
What gets me is the council, island roads, trafic wardens can and do park were ever they want at no cost to there own pockets.
They a very fast at putting tickets on the working man/women’s cars yet they just pull up get out and do what ever they are doing then getting paid to do there job with out fear of a parking ticket. But hayho that’s our council that we pay.
Selfish talk? You obviously don’t live near a road with these problems.
Hey Steve, are you the same person as the other Steve, or have you got a split personality.
I always thought that two people can’t have the exact user name ?
I’m probably wrong as usual ?
I’m the Culver Way Steve so it appears you can use the same name in this instance. I don’t think it’s the same with other social media such as Facebook but I stopped using that years ago, too much false news being passed about by idiots.
Tow them away, £100 to get them back..they will soon stop parking there
People park work vans along Roads
All Companies should have yards to park their vehicles in or pay a premium to park along Roads.
Permits are required.
Some Households clog up roads with too many vehicles
THEY CAN ONLY DRIVE 1 VEHICLE AT A TIME
I hear you. I am actually blocked in by parents dropping off and picking up twice a day. My options are to have arguments all the time (because the type of people doing it are not reasonable considerate people) or just manage around it.
It is the stress and anxiety often that is worse (will I be able to get out, is someone going to give me a load of abuse?)
The council should do much more but they don’t. It’s a problem getting much worse and they have no scheme to do anything. And saying ‘well move house’ is not the answer.
And like you say it is a serious accident waiting to happen.
Inconsiderate and dangerous parking is a problem everywhere. There are many partial solutions (yellow lines, education, better public transport, affordable car parks etc) and, of course, fewer (perhaps even smaller) cars.
In the end it’s down to people being reasonable, a charateristic we in the Western world have lost.
The likes of Joe Biden and Angela Merkel recognise it and have done what they can but it needs much wider leadership.
So no good looking to Westminster.
Try parking in the disabled bay outside Aspire in Ryde!! The folks at Aspire block the double bay with cones and crates! Hardly community minded! And nothing gets done!
that is because the do gooders at aspire are only high minded and full of virtue signalling, unless it is likely to directly affect them, then they are selfish, arrogant and self centered.
Well stop building yet more houses on our Island, we are going to get all the problems associated with overcrowding!
Person shocked that the house they bought near a school and a beach has people parking outside of it. People have just discovered a good parking place, that’s all. Those cars are parked perfectly safely and legally, no obstruction at all, The “concerned resident” is just a nimby, even inviting everyone to park “a couple of streets away”
By the look of it, these pictures were taken during the quiet time of day. As someone who lives in the property next to these vehicles I can tell you that at the times he mentions in this report, you really cannot get a fag paper between the cars.
So if I visited a friend who lived in your street and parked in such a way that you couldn’t leave your drive you would be ok with that? You wouldn’t ask why I didn’t park somewhere more considerate even if it was a couple of streets away. Of course you would. Get real.
parking issues could also be solved by having the law changed to state….
“if you receive 3 parking tickets or your vehicle is observed and recorded as creating an obstruction that is likely to make the road or pavements unsafe for other users three times in a six month period, then your car will be seized, crushed and your licence to drive revoked for a further six months.”
once people get used to the idea that they won’t have a car if they do not park sensibly -then they will worry about it and not do it.
