Armed Forces Champion Councillor Ian Dore is reaching out to Island businesses to help support the opening of a Veterans Hub in Ryde.
Put together by Dale Hillier, who served on HMS Intrepid whilst on active service in the Falklands, the hub aims to become a central point in the community and for Island Veterans as a whole.
Located on Ryde High Street, just round from Minghella Square, it is hoped the hub will be a place where Veterans and friends can meet for a brew but also glean support where possible.
Councillor Ian Dore says:
“First and foremost, Dale Hillier is something of a machine when it comes to getting this hub up and running. His dedication and commitment is faultless. He has a number of cracking friends working with him on this and a tip of the hat is required. My role is one of asking for help and support with the hub. I have no problem with going out, beret in hand for such a good cause.
“I am appealing to Island businesses to please help this fantastic project by donating some furniture and other bits to help them get up and running. This is the opportunity for a number of local businesses to have a major positive effect on others.”
Councillor Michael Lilley, the Isle of Wight Mental Health Champion and Mayor of Ryde is also supporting the project, as well as Ward Councillor Karen Lucioni.
Ian continues:
“For those that will frequent the hub, lets be clear, some are living with the horrific consequences of seeing battle. I am hopeful that a business or two on the Island will donate a sofa, some chairs and other bits that they need to get up and running.
“For many that leave the forces, the battle never really ends once you hit civvy street. If anything, on another level its where it starts. It can be a huge shock to the system and with the experiences piled on, life can take a dark path. We’ve all felt it in one way or another.
“To have a Veteran specific venue to nip in for a brew, pull up a sandbag and swing the lamp with like-minded individuals; for many that is all that’s needed. So please, if you are reading this and can help in anyway, get in touch with them. A random act of kindness is often all that is needed.”
