But over the next month, it’s horse racing that is the sport garnering all the headlines with the impending Cheltenham Festival and the 2024 Grand National. While the island itself hosts notable events like the Isle of Wight Grand National and the Ashey Scurry, there are also other options on the British mainland that may be easier to attend than it initially seems. Here’s a guide to the three easiest racecourses to access from the Isle of Wight.
Sandown Park
Sandown Park is renowned for hosting two of the most anticipated events in the British horse racing calendar. – the Tingle Creek Chase in December and the Coral-Eclipse in July. If you’re someone who’s betting horses online then you’ll already know that these two are big events, with the bookies regularly providing offers and price boosts to provide value to customers. The former is a Grade 1 National Hunt chase, attracting some of the fastest two-mile chasers in Europe. It was most recently won by Jonbon, who romped to victory back in December. Take a ferry from Ryde or Cowes to Southampton or Portsmouth, and from there, catch a train directly to Esher, where Sandown Park is located. Goodwood
Goodwood is home to the prestigious Glorious Goodwood festival, held annually in late July to early August. This five-day meeting is one of the highlights of the flat racing season, featuring the famous Goodwood Cup and the Sussex Stakes. Although primarily known for motor racing, Goodwood also hosts horse racing events and is easily accessible from the Isle of Wight. Begin your journey with a ferry ride to Portsmouth, followed by a short train trip to Chichester. From Chichester, Goodwood is just a taxi ride away. The journey not only is convenient but also lets you enjoy the beautiful coastal and countryside views along the way.
Fontwell Park
Fontwell Park may be smaller than Sandown Park and Goodwood, but it packs a punch with its unique figure-of-eight jump course. The National Spirit Hurdle, held in February, is the standout event of the year. It’s a Grade 2 National Hunt hurdle race that has seen many champions over the years and offers a cozy, intimate racing experience compared to the larger venues. Fontwell is another racecourse that’s easily accessible from the Isle of Wight. After taking a ferry to Portsmouth, hop on a bus or train to Barnham, followed by a short taxi ride to Fontwell. This route offers a blend of convenience and an opportunity to soak in the scenic beauty of the South Coast.
