The owner of one of the Island’s most used taxi companies, Alpha Taxis, has appeared in court to appeal the suspension of his hackney carriage licence.
Adil Aslam, of Carisbrooke Road, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (5th May) to appeal the suspension of his license, as decided by the Isle of Wight Council’s licensing department.
The court heard that Mr Aslam had his license revoked in February this year after allegations that his car smelled like a Class B drug, namely cannabis.
It’s claimed that the car smelled whilst the taxi was being used on 2 separate occasions for school run duties.
Aslam assured the court that the drug is not taken illicitly and is only used as it is medically prescribed to him.
The court adjourned the case until 20th August, when Aslam will find out the fate of his future as a taxi driver.

Regardless of whether it’s used legally or illegally, it shouldn’t be used in or around the vehicle, especially when there’s kids being transported. Not to mention the fact that so many people seem to forget is that cannabis is a plant, the bit you smoke, the flower, many people, myself included are VERY allergic to said flower, so if i get into a taxi that smells like weed, i can get an allergic reaction. But all of that is completely beside the point because you’re legally not allowed to drive whilst high, the same way you’re not allowed to drive whilst drunk. If he drives for a living, and for whatever reason medically needs weed, simply put, have it in an alternate form like an oil, and only take it outside of the vehicle, away from the passengers. It’s so simple so he deserves the loss of his carriage.
