Island Cohousing has been developing plans for an intentional cohousing development on the Isle of Wight.
A viable plot of land has been identified and valued, design discussions with architects have been held and the Isle of Wight Council have offered their outline support – although it has not been disclosed where this land is located.
The benefits of cohousing include affordability as the homes are smaller and more energy efficient. There are also shared facilities for laundry and meals.
Being largely pedestrian with shared recreation space and growing areas also makes cohousing developments safe and sociable with residents meeting to eat and clubs and activities on-site provided in the common house. Residents have the opportunity to make inter-generational friends, sharing tools, tasks and pastimes including landscape food growing.
Cohousing is also more sustainable than traditional housing because of the energy efficient houses, car-sharing, bulk shopping, growing food for all, composting and the reduced ownership of white goods.
Residents of existing cohousing communities have outlined the various benefits:
“We socialise with other children and adults without having to organise, pack a bag or tidy the house, enjoy healthy meals everyday yet I only cook once a fortnight.”
“How great it feels to live in a supportive community who all pull together in difficult times.”
“I now live in an eco-home which reflects my green values and gives me freedom in terms of my income needs and livelihood choices.”
The plan here is to build 25 homes on the site with car parking by the entrance, a common house – administration centre, large room for shared meals & activities, some office space and accommodation for visitors – plus a range of 2, 3 & 4 bedroom houses each with a small garden, paved/tarmacked access road for pedestrian use, recreation/play area, quiet spaces and a ‘growing area’ for home produce.
A public meeting will be held at Riverside Newport on Saturday 15th April at 13:30 for people to discuss the project and share their thoughts.

no – just more housing again
and this idea of some utopia of everyone living together all happy is BS
It will simply end up being an area where everyone argues and fights because the communal spaces are a mess, everyone will be in each others faces and sponging and leeching will be rife
car sharing – pah – arguments over whose car, who pays for fuel etc just for starters
the vision on sale…Residents have the opportunity to make inter-generational friends, sharing tools, tasks and pastimes including landscape food growing.
the likely reality – residents will be surrounded by drugs, crime and deprivation, with nothing sacred, everything being robbed the moment you turn your back, in a communal space.
Sounds like a Kabbutz camp in Israel …
This is the sort of place I imagine hell to be like.
A work camp in Siberia
Why has the proposed site not been made public. Does anyone else smell a rat here
Yes I smell a very large fat rat. At a guess I would say as my first choice Ryde, or on the opposite spectrum Brightstone or similar nimby village maybe??
Camp hill prison ?
I’ve heard it is west wight
You can all rest assured it won’t be in Bembridge, for the most destructive developers won’t ‘go’ in their own woods
Yarmouth old school.
All will be revealed once someone crosses my palm with a brown envelope.
And so it begins – force the peasants into shared housing where they can live like penned up animals in communist style barracks, heated to the same temperature and sharing basic facilities – welcome to the globalist utopia they have planned for the general population
As I read it, I thought old soviet union or 1930s germany, both utopia apparently..
I mean, they had one cool concept in USRR which created today’s most valued neighbourhoods in Poland, Czechia and so on – the idea to think about new developments holistically: you build not only the blocks of flats but also a school, a surgery, places for shops etc.
Imagine if every new development on the Island actually added one GP surgery or little specialised clinic, not only houses.
That’s the basic things you’d want, shops, schools, dentist, GPs , all you get is more breeding hutches
Only works if those that rock the boat can be swiftly ejected. Otherwise some people would make other people’s life a misery.
So in other words it’s a commune.
A travellers camp, what fun…not
Love and peace man !
Sounds to me like the start of the World Economic Forums plans.
Where there’s a scheme, there’s a schemer, this is just another way to make money from property development and to land-grab land. Someone or a conglomerate will get rich from this. Stop pretending it’s for the greater good.
so a group in bristol love the idea of co housing , good for them, has anyone asked the residents of the island.
“idea” = ?
My allotment at home is bigger than the one in the diagram and mine is no were big enough for just two of us.
Who comes up with this rubbish? And who lets it get past to the council to consider?
Few screws loose spme were.
Well fair play, it is the island council !
Omg they really are being ridiculous, sounds like a hell hole to me !!!!!
Having 1bad neighbour is bad enough, but to share facilities with God only knows who , sounds horrendous, …
Will the council send in someone to check hygiene????.
I wouldn’t want to live in a place like that, …
And if they are not saying where ????
Sounds like a greenspace 2 me !!!!
Or is it someone’s backyard ?????
Will wait and see …..
Just realised the meeting is today!!!
Thanks for the early warning ( not) …..
There’s a reason why this mainly works for religious groups. Because the religion is the glue that holds it together. Ain’t no glue in this scenario.
Wow, we get our own version of Prora.
The world got rid of one madman in 45, and bred a whole new batch……
I have never heard of such bloody clap trap! Next thing will be sharing bathrooms and beds. It’s probably meant for the boat visitors.
Something suspicious, clearly they have to tick a box saying they consulted with community, but only two hours notice and on first nice day of year most people would not of even seen till now sat relaxing and it’s past
They made sure there wasn’t much notice given! So when people didn’t turn up to object they can say people LIKE this Idea!
Yet more housing. Where are the doctors, dentists, schools, hospitals and jobs?
Holistic developments that bring housing together with a (pre)school, surgery, shops, buses etc. are awesome. But if you mention it today you get accused of being a commie because they were mostly done in USSR ;D

In Bulgaria and Poland, who’d want to come to this crummy country?
The Isle of Wight is to become Portmeirion
So the council give their outline support for a commune, may I suggest the ideal piece of land is the Shingles sand bank
No No No I don’t want to share my laundry facilities with any old Tom dick or Harry I don’t want to sit and eat with strangers I want to own my own car that nobody else can use and I can get in and drive at the drop of a hat if I want to because it’s mine mine MINE I don’t want to be social people are horrible I want to live in my own house not share it have my own white goods my own food my own life anyone who falls for this shit is just a brainwashed automaton it shouldn’t be allowed if I wanted to live like that I would join a religious cult and move to it’s compound that’s what this development is a cults compound in short I want my stuff to be my stuff not communal and to choose when I mix with other humans and choose which humans
Don’t buy it then? Live and let live?
Letting others express themselves was how the roman empire fell. We can’t allow these communists to enjoy life. The rainforest will burn!
growing food for all!
This is socialism and will fail miserably – after a while, those that are working, will resent those that do not work, yet get the benefits of communal living. Eventually, those that work leave, as they are fed up with the sponging deadbeats not working/contributing and those that don’t work remain – the whole area falls in to disrepair and becomes a s*hithole.
remove the free benefits, free housing, free food and then those that don’t work will suddenly be inspired to work, to survive.
As long as population keeps growing, this will be more and more needed.
Sounds more like a commune camp…I can just about smell it now…. skunk weed…
I smell car fumes on my driveway and I love it. Why would anyone else want something different?
Where are these so called existing cohousing communities sites on the mainland ?
The Island council know this is a hot potato, by not saying where a site has been identified.
Why the short notice? Published by IE on the same day as the meeting!
Where did the the notification originate from and was the lack of notice deliberate?
Were there many people at the meeting? I am assuming not many, if any.
Sounds like a kibbutz to me.

They tried it before in Peckham.
And a BIG high wall to keep them all in
Because affordable is too expensive for most they are selling HMO s as 5 star luxury.
Blanchard’s fields??
