The Isle of Wight Divisional Football Association has banned football friendlies in its jurisdiction after a rise in the rate of COVID infections.
On Saturday, 3 friendlies were not played due to players being unavailable after testing positive for COVID-19 and having to self-isolate. 3 league games were also called off for the same reason.
The number of infections on the Island rose to 446 per 100,000 this Saturday. This is well above the UK average of 310.5. The whole of the Isle of Wight is now purple on the government website, indicating a high rate of positive cases.
The Isle of Wight DFA wrote:
“A decision has been made by the IOWDFA that no more friendlies will take place, and this includes those that have already been sanctioned.
“We must not forget that we have a duty to the community at large to do what we can to avoid spreading the virus further.”
The previous 2 seasons of Island League football have been disrupted due to outbreaks of COVID-19. It is to be hoped further outbreaks do not lead to the ban being extended to competitive games.

Isle of Wight has the highest rate in England except for Lincolnshire I think. That’s the highest rate in a country full of out of control Covid outbreaks. Perhaps the tin foil hat wearer is actually you?
It’s about time we had some fresh blood to lead the island fa!! They haven’t got a clue you only have to go see some of the tournaments they organise its a shambles to say the least. At an average game on the island you probably have 15 to 20 parents watching the games I have 2 boys 2 different teams and there is never really y more than that parent wise. Yet 50000 to a premiership game. But what else would you expect from the pair that can’t even organise a tournaments correctly everyone they input in is a shambles and before you ask put me forward I will shake them up and sort it out for them ⚽
