St George’s Crosses have appeared on mini roundabouts on the Isle of Wight recently – and they’ve divided opinion fast.
Red crosses have been painted on to roundabouts in Newport and Ryde, replacing the usual plain white circles with the bold colours of the English national flag. The markings aren’t subtle – and neither are the reactions.
Supporters say it’s a proud, patriotic demonstration of English identity. Photos have flooded social media, with many Islanders regarding the flags as a fun and creative gesture. But others aren’t impressed.
Some have questioned whether it’s legal to paint road markings without permission. There are also safety concerns, with critics warning the crosses could distract drivers or cause confusion at junctions. A few locals say public roads shouldn’t be used for personal or political expression – even national pride.
So far, there’s been no word from either Island Roads or the Isle of Wight Council on whether the flags will be scrubbed off – or left as they are.
The Isle of Wight isn’t alone. Similar flags have appeared on roundabouts in towns across England this month, sparking headlines and heated debate. Some councils have removed them. Others have stayed quiet.
But are these bold symbols a harmless nod to English heritage or a misuse of public space?

don’t know what to do when approaching roundabouts.
Can’t see a problem, they will wear out in a few weeks and how can they be distracting, can’t be worse than pride flags on police cars at least this applies to everyone.
In America they fly the stars and stripes everywhere, from homes. Businesses and government buildings. Even on trees and gates in rural areas. Patriotism and love for the flag at it’s finest.
In England the national flag and the Union flag are treated as banners of hate and division.
We should all be proud of our flag and fly it like the Americans do theirs.

I’ve seen zebra crossings, roundabouts, and t-junctions painted with the rainbow flag, BLM and Trans flag, yet nobody made a noise about that.

What it affirms is that many have had enough of Two-Tier Keir. Some Counties are finding that their Union flag has been removed or St. George’s Cross, painted on roundabouts, has been painted over. Some Social Media posts have stated that the raising of the Union flag and painting of roundabouts is offensive and not in keeping with diversity and inclusion.
Brits have had enough of this wokery-pokery world this Country has become. When has celebrating your Country’s flag ever been offensive?
If you are one of those people who find celebrating your Country by the use of the Union flag or painting of roundabouts offensive, I suggest you leave Great Britain for another. I am sure you would get a wake-up call if you informed your new Country of your thoughts on locals flying their Country’s flag. In some countries, such distaste would be seen as treason. And, the punishment is five years in jail.
There are no laws in the UK that punish desecrating our national flag.

I think it is very good, will help people actually see there IS a roundabout there !! Unknown why there is a problem flying our national flag.. This is England..the flag stands for England, those that do not like it, should be charged with treason, and deported. Immigrants should NOT be allowed to fly their country flags in our country. Its not a show of pride for the country though is it… maybe if they were painted after the women’s euros win or something similar it would feel that way but the sorts of people painting them aren’t happy with the current state of the UK I’m sure! Which is why its inappropriate, its a signal of ‘you’re not welcome here’ and ‘I love nigel farage!’ rather than anything positive. The fact its the St George just allows these people to make excuses about what it really represents
St George…who was actually Syrian, and an immigrant of many different countries.
Unfortunately the flag (and not the UK one, thankfully) is now forever synonymous with the cry of INGERLAND from knuckle-dragging twunts to such an extent, many of us ARE ashamed to display it.

I am a proud Englishmen and all for flying flags but we all know that these daubs have nothing to do with patriots or national pride but rather racism and inciting hatred. They don’t make me hate anyone, in fact I don’t hate anyone. The problem with many people is that they have theses ingrained views that they simply will not change. The national display of patriotism is about people saying enough is enough. If you can justify the rape gangs, illegal immigrants propositioning young girls or shoplifting, please do so.
