There are now 143 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the Isle of Wight, according to the latest data from Public Health England.
With the number of tests ramping up thanks to the permanent facility at Medina, a further 16 cases have been identified locally.
The Island still has one of the lowest number of cases in the country and has a lot less than the island of Jersey. It comes as the Government launches a new track and trace app which will be trialed on the Isle of Wight from this week.
NHS England report that there have now been 28 coronavirus deaths in hospital, with the Office for National Statistics confirming 3 people have also died in the community – 2 in care homes and 1 at home – as of 17th April.
The latest information from the Isle of Wight NHS Trust confirms 22 people have recovered from COVID-19 and have been discharged from hospital. This number is expected to be updated in due course when the Trust issue their latest statement on recent deaths.
The total number of confirmed active cases on the Isle of Wight is 93 – the highest it has been – but the true number could be slightly less, depending on the number of hospital recoveries.
So even more die than ever leave Hospital once they have contracted CV and are taken in.
Is this the case in all hospitals or our we just unlucky?

That’s a question which I would like to ask too Sahazri.
It’s a concern that fewer seem to make it out than go in for treatment, despite the obvious dedication of the medical staff.
It’s in no way a criticism of the local hospital, with staff putting their lives on the line to help others. However there are techniques in treatment, which apparently are not used universally, such as frequently turning patients over and draining the lungs etc.
How much sharing of successful medical techniques takes place between hospitals ?
– Perhaps this maybe behind the apparent problem..and it concerns communication.
My admiration to all who are caring for others in these trying circumstances.

The number of recovered has stayed the same for some days now. Hopefully there will be news of some more recovering soon. So sad for those, and their families who have lost their lives
How many tests have been done on the island

Well I have to say the Echo is very optimistic in their reporting and also very slow, although not as bad as Isle of Wight Radio and the County Press.
Lets wait with excitement to see what St. Mary’s hospital does say. We’ve given them plenty of time to work on the statistics!

We need more data on how many who ‘recover’ do so without life changing damage from CV

the more people get tested the more positive cases will be found . seems obvious to me.
Yer but most people on here are thick and just look at numbers without investing numbers , of course the numbers are going to go up as they have been testing lots more people.

The test they do will only show if you actively have it. We need a test to show if you have it AND if you have ‘had’ it.
Otherwise if you are shown not to have it, then you may within hours catch it, so you will have it, even though it shows you haven’t got it, so pointless.
But if it showed you have had it, then, presumably you will then have some immunity for a few months until, like flu this virus mutates making past immunity and any vaccine developed for the first pre mutation useless once more.
So it is the ‘test’ that needs development to cover ‘got it’ OR ‘had it’.

There are some real thicko’s on this chat. The hospital can not be held accountable for deaths remember we have nearly
30% OF THE POPULATION WHO ARE ELDERLY..If the they are over a certain age with other problems they can not be ventilated therefore they will die. The next thing we will have is the thicko’s bellyaching about the new App coming on
theiisland which will breach there human rights even though it never asks for any personal information just the first few
letters of your postcode. The only time they ask your name is if you need a testing kit.
As people are visiting the island and staying in their second homes it will cause problems I think now people should have their residency checked on the ferries
I couldn’t agree with you more. It should’ve been done right at the beginning. Along with residency, proof of essential travel. That stretch of water between us and the mainland should’ve been our safety net.
This morning Sky news said the island had the largest increase of cases in the UK.
