A local football coach who made the ‘foolish’ decision to drink-drive was caught by Police as he was speeding out of East Cowes, the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court heard this week.
Kian Mooney, 21, of Pelham Road in Cowes, pleaded guilty to drink driving when he appeared before the court on Tuesday.
The bench heard from the prosecution that it was 03:40 on 20th February this year when Police spotted Mooney speeding along Whippingham Road in his Peugeot 307. Officers followed the vehicle before pulling the driver over on Fairlee Road, heading towards Newport.
Mooney failed a roadside breath test and was taken into custody, where he blew 50 on the evidential breathalyser. The legal limit being 35.
Defending, James Osborne said his client had been at a friend house drinking but had no way of getting home, so decided to drive. Mr Osborne told the court: “he only blew 50, so quite a low reading”.
Magistrates, who said that Mooney had made a ‘foolish and expensive’ mistake, handed the 21-year-old a 14-month driving ban and fined him £280, as well as ordering him to pay £85 costs and a £34 surcharge.

Some options the defendant forgot to consider
‘Quite a low reading’. Oh, well that’s alright then. I think Shakespeare had the right idea…
