PHOTO GALLERY & VIDEO: Specialist detection, identification and monitoring (DIM) officers from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service are working alongside Police to search a terraced property on Cross Lane in Newport this afternoon (Friday).

A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drugs offences following a raid on the property by Hampshire Constabulary as part of an investigation into the suspected supply of illegal drugs.

Mainland-based Hazardous Area Response Team and fire service officers, a DIM unit from Winchester and specialist Police search advisors are currently all on scene alongside a National Inter-Agency Liaison Officer.

Firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are also on scene and are standing by in case of fire or explosion.

Island Echo understands Police have been on scene at the junction with Howard Close since last night and that emergency teams are today working to establish what exactly is inside the property, if anything at all.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:

“Officers may be observed wearing protective clothing which is a precautionary measure only. There is no risk posed to the wider public in relation to this activity.”
