Southern Vectis is showing its support for the Government’s contact tracing programme by encouraging Islanders and staff to take part in the app trial.
Residents on the Isle of Wight are the first to be offered access to the system, which is designed to minimise the spread of COVID-19. A successful trial of the app could lead to the safe easing of lockdown measures across the country.
Richard Tyldsley, Southern Vectis general manager, says:
“Everyone on the island has access to the new app, and we’re throwing our full support behind it.
“Over the last two months, my colleagues have been committed to transporting key workers here, so they can carry out their vital roles. Now – as islanders – they are proud to be helping pave the way to brighter times ahead.
“Our drivers are looking forward to a time when they can operate wider bus services here – but first we must all pull together and make this trial a success. We urge everyone who can, to download this pioneering app – so the rest of the country can follow suit.
“This is our chance to help reduce the chance of the virus spreading. It’s all about taking action to protect ourselves, and the NHS.”
As previously reported by Island Echo, Island residents are being encouraged to support the nation by being part of the next phase of the Government’s Test & Trace Programme.

Hope there telling every one to get out and enjoy the sun no app will sort out a virus but vit d and c will be healthy and dont lock ur self up lowing ur immune system stressing your self out over what the media says and making your self more ill we have all had our rights stripped for lies
Too right bob, people have had enough of the lies, especially when you see Sweden, no lockdown and the pathetic virus has killed less then the uk, infection rate is about the same. So does lockdown work? Theres the truth! No it doesn’t . And before the scared sheep say, you wouldn’t say that if it was your family, yes I would because if they are that ill with underlying health issues, they are going to die any way. We all know if you die of a heart attack, test your blood and covid 19 is present it goes down as covid death, more lies.
If we believe that any app could help with easing the current lockdown then that would also be true of an app that does NOT create a centralised database.
The makers of the two (that matter) smartphone operating systems have collaborated to create a decentralised and equally effective system but the government has gone for the centralised model.
And guess what? The centralised model has created a massive resistance from people who see the potential for abuse of it.
Now you can argue about the merits of centralised/decentralised but the bottom line IS that there would be no such resistance of a decentralised system, so ergo more people would take it up.
Go figure.
Drop the overpriced bus fare and maybe just maybe I’ll take a bus company seriously……otherwise stay out of politics
I wonder if vectis provides its drivers with a company phone? If not, they can’t enforce employees to download it. Whereas, a company phone, they can
Oh dont worry vinny,I’m sure there a plan where everybody in the land will have to have a smart phone,by law. No that want happen ,I hear you cry ! Really? There was a time when you could ride a motorcycle without a helmet! But of course that choose was taken away, in the interest of public safety. Do you see where this is going ? And as to southern vectis getting political? When I saw a police car in rainbow colours for pride! Then the rules well out the window . Any tool available to get the job done,I think that’s the governments attitude.
mr justice – have a look at the retina scanning they do on air travellers in the USA. So much for the free country eh.
Anon I couldn’t agree more,as we know the big distraction is the weak virus, I say weak because the projection was 500,000 deaths in uk. Its crawling just over 30,000. And to keep everyone scare it can now kill anyone, of any age and health .so people are not focused on anything else,so the measures that are introducing ( for our own good of course) are just being accepted. I think USA will be the first country to have civil unrest, that will start the ball rolling.
When those downloads exceed 148,000 you will not hear anymore about the app, they cannot confirm that the 50,000 downloads are by Isle of Wight handsets as you can download it anywhere with a IOW postcode! They are desperate to keep their NHSX thing going. Now I hear talk of dumping it and going with the udder one – Apple/Google, out of the frying pan into the fire. Count me out.
Yes folks that Isle of Wight app trial is going great guns. 50,000 downloads out of a population of 148,000 and no one can verify if any of them were done using Isle of Wight handsets as you can download anywhere, even on Craggy island with a IOW postcode! Once the downloads on IOW exceed 148,000 you won’t hear anymore about it.
Is Bojo planning large scale rectal scanning? That would make sense, if they look at his fundament first.
The latest news is that the UK government has been told that NHS app yoke thing is going to have a massive car crash, its so shite.
My phone has battery life of 2% now when without the app it would’ve been about 80 at this time. What’s the use if my phone goes dead? Can’t track and trace then can it?
