The South East will benefit from a major funding boost to create stronger public transport networks – but will the Isle of Wight be included in the windfall?
A total of £36billion in savings from HS2 will be reinvested in hundreds of transport projects across the country, delivering more buses, reopening railway stations, and ensuring major funding for new and improved roads.
Every penny that would have been spent extending the route will instead be redirected into roads, rail, and buses to drive economic growth and provide jobs with 4% of this earmarked for the South East.
This new approach will look to leverage private sector investment, unlocking £6.5billion to invest in projects that people and communities really need around the country – including the South East.
In the 40-page Department for Transport document there is no mention of specific projects for the Isle of Wight but Islanders will benefit from the extension of the £2 bus fare, as previously reported by Island Echo.

Thought the whole idea of scrapping HS2 was to save money that the Treasury couldn’t afford. Rather it would go on healthcare.
Use it to build a bridge or a tunnel to
Dinosaur Isle.
That will solve the expensive Ferry crossings when
families have to visit loved ones in mainland hospitals.
Government that can’t into building a rail above the ground is surely going to manage to build a bridge over Solent or an underwater tunnel, sure thing.
If visiting hospitals as either a patient or visiting a patient is the main reason to build a fixed link to the mainland one imagines that it would be both cheaper and more beneficial to the island to build an additional hospital here.
