A man who called 999 saying he’d kill a woman – but never had any intention of doing so – pleaded guilty to a malicious communication charge when he appeared in front of Magistrates this morning (Tuesday).
Jonathan Nash, 58, of Westcourt Close, Shorwell pleaded guilty to 1 count of sending an offensive message and 1 count of failing to surrender to bail when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier today. He failed to appear in court last week and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Ann Smout, prosecuting said that on the evening of 5th September, at around 23:40, Nash made a call to the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service making threats to kill a woman who was with him at his home. Whilst talking to the call handler, Nash said “if you don’t get someone over here I’m going to f**king kill her”. The 58-year-old also made threats to the call handler.
Police and the ambulance service were mobilised to the scene but found no injury or evidence of any injury to Nash or the female.
Nash was taken to Newport Police Station and was questioned. It was here that Nash admitted he had no explanation for what he had said over the phone and that he just wanted to get the woman out of his address.
Defending, Jim Osborne said that his client was a recovering alcoholic who had struggled with various mental health issues. Regarding the nonappearance, Osborne told the court that Nash had significant mobility issues and was currently in a wheelchair meaning he couldn’t come to court on his own.
Nash previously featured on Island Echo when he was convicted of drink driving back in 2021.
The case was adjourned until 11th November to allow for a pre-sentence report to be complied. Nash has been granted conditional bail until that time.
