A retired Shanklin woman tragically took her own life after becoming convinced her breast cancer was far more serious than doctors had told her, an inquest has heard.
70-year-old Pauline Ann Chaney was found in the sea at Shanklin Beach on the morning of 8th September 2024. She was pronounced dead at 10:00.
A Section 9C inquest, concluded on 29th December, detailed that Mrs Chaney had been due to undergo minor surgery for localised breast cancer the day after her death. Despite this, she had convinced herself that the cancer had already spread and made the devastating decision to end her life without confiding in anyone.
Footage from a local webcam captured Mrs Chaney walking into the water, which assisted Senior Coroner Caroline Sumeray in reaching her conclusion that Pauline deliberately walked into the sea to drown herself.
The medical cause of death was confirmed as drowning. The coroner recorded a conclusion of suicide.
Mrs Chaney, who was born in Blackpool, lived on Hatherton Road in Shanklin with her husband. She had previously worked as an office manager.
