The Isle of Wight’s senior women’s football team Shanklin Ladies FC were presented with the Hampshire Division 1 trophy at the County Ground on Sunday (8th May).
With 1 game of their season left to play, Shanklin are 13 points ahead of their nearest rivals Rushmoor Community women. Shanklin Ladies won their penultimate game of the season 4-2 against Widbrook United Women, with Angelika Tatchell putting in a player-of-the-match performance for the home side.
Shanklin won the Division 1 Championship thanks to an 1-2 away victory at Bournemouth Sports on 17th April thanks to 2 goals from Gemma Woodford, which included a 25-yard thunderbolt into the top corner of the goal.
Shanklin Ladies will be hoping their success will inspire their counterparts in the Shanklin Men’s side to bring further trophies for the seaside town: the men’s team are currently in contention for the Isle of Wight Division 1 title and the Memorial and Challenge Cups.
Shanklin Ladies are managed by Shannon Kilcullen and Kate Ednay, and captained by Gemma Woodford, with Georgia Dye as vice-captain. Gemma Woodford is Shanklin’s leading scorer this season with 12 goals, followed by Chloe Parkes (11 goals) and Ceri Duffield (7 goals). Other stars of the side include 16-year-old full back Katie Barron, who is playing her 1st season of adult football, and goalkeepers Kirren Shaw and Ellen Bridges, who have both kept vital clean sheets during the campaign.
The team have been assisted off the pitch by secretary Julie Woodhouse, away game driver and linesman, Laurence Schofield and home linesman, Robbie Dye.
