Temperatures plunged to as low as -8.3c across the Isle of Wight overnight, with Shalfleet recording the coldest conditions in what is believed to be the most severe freeze since 2018.
According to data from IW Met Service, the early hours of this morning (Tuesday) saw widespread sub-zero conditions, following a yellow ice warning issued on Monday afternoon.
Shalfleet topped the list at -8.3c, with other freezing lows including:
- Newbridge: -7.4c
- Sandown: -6.8c
- Bathingbourne: -6.4c
- Thorley: -6.3c
The drop in temperature closely matched forecasters’ predictions of -8c to -9c in inland areas such as central Newport.
A visual map published by IW Met Service shows much of the Isle of Wight dipping between -4c and -7c overnight.
Island Roads has confirmed that, although temperatures are now beginning to rise, there remains a risk of ice forming during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Gritting teams will be out again from 04:00 and drivers are being urged to take extra care while the cold conditions persist.
