UPDATED: Police, fire and ambulance crews are attending a serious crash on Military Road in which a car has come to rest on its roof in a field.
Fire crews from Newport and Ventnor – including the Rescue Tender – are currently on scene near to Atherfield alongside a Co-Responder from Freshwater, 2 ambulances, a rapid response paramedic, an ambulance officer and several Police units.
Island Echo understands that emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 23:30 tonight (Friday) and spent sometime hunting for the vehicle before locating the small blue car a significant distance from the carriageway.
Military Road has been closed in both directions at the junction of Chale and Brighstone.
The condition of the casualty or causalities is currently unknown.
UPDATE @ 01:00 – A hard road closure has been put in place by Island Roads at the request of Police, indicating the seriousness of the incident.
The vehicle, which appears to be a hatchback, has come to rest in a field around 100m off the carriageway. It appears to have rolled several times in what Police are describing as a ‘very serious’ crash.
The road is expected to remain closed for the remainder of the night.
UPDATE @ 05:10 – Military Road has now re-opened to all traffic following the conclusion of scene investigations.
Hampshire Constabulary are yet to comment on the incident.
UPDATE @ 09:47 – It has been confirmed that fire crews used specialist cutting equipment to release the trapped individual, understood to be male, from the wreckage of the car.
The casualty is said to have been taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport but Police are yet to comment on the nature of the injuries sustained.
UPDATE @ 10:40 – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that 1 person has died and 2 others have sustained minor injuries in last night’s crash.
