A Newport-based author has released a new novel that explores post-pandemic Britain through the lives of a close-knit group of friends.
Local writer Roger Sanders has released Under New Management, a follow-up to his 2021 debut Ted’s Cafe, with the book now available worldwide via Amazon KDP.
The new novel reunites readers with David Tanner and his friends as they come together again in September 2021, against the backdrop of a country emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic and adjusting to a ‘new normal’.
As the months unfold, the characters navigate the realities of post-work life while Britain itself faces a series of defining moments – from the escalating cost of living crisis and the continued fallout from Brexit, to political scandals, the Platinum Jubilee and the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The story weaves these national events into the personal lives of its characters, offering a reflective and relatable account of how ordinary people respond to extraordinary times.
Speaking about the long road to publication, Sanders said:
“It has taken longer to get this book published than I hoped. My publisher had the manuscript for over a year but sadly went out of business in 2024.
“After trying to find another with little success, I decided to try the self-publishing model, which has worked out well.
“It’s been a learning curve, but I’m thrilled to finally share this story with readers.”
A lifelong Island resident, Sanders draws on his observations of contemporary British life to create narratives rooted in everyday experience.
Under New Management is available in paperback and eBook formats via Amazon, as well as locally at Medina Books in Cowes and Triple A Records in Newport.
