Bembridge RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat conducted a large search for a possible object in the water off the coast of the Isle of Wight yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).
A 25ft motorboat started taking on water after hitting what the crew thought was a semi-submerged object in the main shipping channel to the north west of No Mans Land Fort.
With the casualty vessel safely towed into Portsmouth by a passing Shannon-class Lifeboat (13-18) that was on passage in the area, Bembridge’s lifeboat volunteers were tasked to launch by Solent Coastguard at 13:50 to try to locate the offending object.
After an extensive search and having only found a piece of timber and a plastic traffic bollard, the Tamar-class All Weather Lifeboat returned to Bembridge and was recovered by 17:45.
