Motorists in Newport can expect weeks of disruption from today (Monday) as a scheme to replace every single traffic light on Coppins Bridge gets underway.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the work being undertaken will see all the signals at Coppins Bridge upgraded to include the latest ‘intelligent technology’ to make them more reliable and energy-efficient, and to improve remote access to enable responses to changes in traffic volumes and faster fault reporting.
The programme will be undertaken either side of Christmas to ensure the project does not impact the main festive shopping period and will involve 7 signal sites undertaken over 5 phases, to further reduce disruption.
Phase A gets underway today at the Coppins Bridge/St George’s Way signals – outside Fever. This will involve night works with temporary traffic lights and lane closures in place. During the day, the temporary lights will be manually controlled to help with the flow of traffic.
The next phase will be focusing on the pedestrian crossing from Barton Road – again these works will be undertaken at night with manual control during the day. Phases C and E will be more disruptive with 24-hour closures and diversions.
just do way with them IT,S a roundabout. if drivers can.t get there head round that they need a retest.
But they are island drivers so you may need all the help they can get
Turn the things off at night would help the amount of times I have been sat at a red light no other cars on coppins then the light goes green and move onto another red light and we talk about ways to reduce emissions.
If we’re lucky, they might just install ‘smart’ lights that have radar detectors on them…

Sorry to all the trades for not shopping with you but the council and island roads have put uet another obstacle in the way to boost there egos.
Or they’re upgrading the lights to make them ‘more reliable and energy-efficient.’
Maybe they should just never upgrade or replace anything. I bet you’re one of the first to moan if something breaks or goes wrong
No im not im just peed off with all the stop start constant temporary trafic lights
People trying to get to work is a uter nightmare and this has been going on for a good few years.
And why would anyone use tax payers hard erned money to upgrade something that all ready works.

Probably because things are designed with a certain service life in mind. Obviously I don’t know in that much detail, but it may be that the lights are all life expired. Or maybe they’re not set up and designed for modern levels of traffic. They may even be trying to future proof them so they can handle increased levels of traffic over time

The times that the lights have been out of action it’s always flowed a lot better. But really needs a bridge coming out the back of the industrial estate to Fairlee road. Remove all the traffic running to the ferries.
Smart traffic lights are a waste of time in Island roads hands. No one there capable of programming them. Just look at all the other sets they’ve installed.
Gosh if only all the people commenting here could apply for a job at Island Roads all our ‘problems’ would be solved…. So many traffic light and road experts.
id rather clean public toilets than work for island roads. It would be like going back to pre school working for them.
Hope this is not another improvement that make thing worse. Have to wait and see.

this will be another failed project of this I.O.W Council and Island Roads , why the hell dont they listen to the road users , and stop wasting public money on failed attemps,lights on a roundabout should be removed ,i have never seen so many c k ups at coppings Bridge ,and this will be another ,just do away with the lights ,already the transportation on this island is a shambles.what with the Trains ,Ferrys ,Floating bridge ,Buses,
