A 25-year-old scaffolder from London, who was travelling to the mainland from the Isle of Wight, has been charged with drink driving after savvy Red Funnel passengers alerted Police yesterday evening (Friday).
Officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Roads Policing Unit have praised the actions of concerned members of the public on board the 17:00 Red Funnel ferry travelling from East Cowes to Southampton.
The driver of the Iveco scaffolding lorry was spotted drinking alcohol on board – enough to spark concern.
Police managed to stop the vehicle on High Street – just around the corner from the terminal in Southampton – where a positive roadside breath test was provided.
25-year-old Adam Barker, of St James Way in Sidcup, London has now been charged with driving when alcohol level above limit.
He has been bailed to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on 17th February 2022.

What an absolute idiot? Good on the passengers.
Alcohol should not be available onboard car ferries, neither should it be available in garage shops or motorway service stations.
I expect the ferry’s sell booze for those that aren’t drivers, and I’ve never seen any service station on the island selling booze…..if any do name them..
Sainsbury do Newport
Fairlee service stations
Harwoods petrol station
Fairlee
Strange I saw a chap drink a whole bottle of red wine when he went to his car wobbling about I phoned the police and they didn’t want to know I followed this car and he was all over the road in his bmw
A scaffolder? What a surprise.
Stupid comment
Why do these idiots think it’s ok to neck alcohol, then get behind the wheel and drive?
It’s just out of control and getting worse.
They obviously haven’t got much between their ears.
Bet his van was overloaded also.
Just look at any scaffolders motors rear end dragging on the road.
