UPDATED: SATURDAY SUSPENSION FOR COWES FLOATING BRIDGE SERVICE

The troublesome Cowes Floating Bridge has been pulled from service once again this morning (Saturday).

It has been confirmed that the service, which crosses the River Medina from East Cowes to West Cowes, has been suspended.

No reason has yet been given for this latest disruption.

It’s thought that Floating Bridge No.6 has been stuck on the East Cowes side of the river since at least 07:45.

As usual, a launch service is in operation for cyclists and pedestrians.

UPDATE SUNDAY – The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed the service is to remain suspended all weekend, due to an electrical fault.

“the service, which crosses the River Medina from East Cowes to West Cowes”…
OMG… I never knew that…

(Although technically, with this latest FB, it would probably be more accurate to say it Doesn’t cross the river… as it seems to be broken most of the time)

I think that the fact it crosses from East to West is the cause of the problem. That is what it was designed to do.
It wasn’t designed to cross from West to East, and this has continually caused all the breakdowns.
If only the original specifications had stated it was required to cross in both directions ….

It’s normal practice that news outlets give ALL the information that’s relevant, because there will always be some readers who don’t have as much knowledge as others. Not all readers live on the Island, for example. Or may have only recently moved here. Or go eveywhere by car. It’s what a responsible news outlet does. You’d soon complain if it was about something you were becoming inerested in, but basic iinfo was missing.

Don’t be too hard on Island Echo in giving details of the ferry. There are people living in West Wight who have never made the journey ‘all the way’ to Cowes.

Take lessons from the Woolwich Ferry which runs with very few hitches and it’s free for pedestrians, cyclists, cars, vans and lorries.

NEVER. The cost of hiring consultants only for them to report that a bridge would be impractical , after the consultants had spent many months investigating, would be a total waste .

Put a bridge across instead of that floating disaster.
Stop wasting money and put a swing bridge.
There would be no more problems and it would be a great asset for this very run down Island.
