UPDATED: A sailor has been hit by a boom and is being evacuated from the 50m schooner Eleonora in the Solent this afternoon (Tuesday).
Bembridge RNLI were tasked to launch their all weather lifeboat (ALB) by Solent Coastguard at just before 14:10 after the crew of the luxury $7million yacht declared a medical emergency on board.
According to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), one of the crew members has been struck by the vessel’s boom.
Coastguard Rescue 104 from Lee-on-Solent has scrambled to the scene and is currently circling the vessel, with the volunteer crew of Bembridge Lifeboat working to transfer the casualty from the yacht.
The rescue has progressed West up through the Solent with emergency teams currently alongside Eleonora off Osborne Bay.
UPDATE @ 15:27 – The casualty has been airlifted by Coastguard Rescue 104 helicopter to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, Portsmouth and is said to be conscious and breathing.
Bembridge RNLI’s Alfred Albert Williams ALB has been stood down from the incident and is returning to station.
