A meeting of Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists was held in the Western Esplanade Gardens in Ryde on 13th August 1934.
Earlier that day, ‘the Blackshirts’ had paraded around the town and attempted to hand out fascist literature to sceptical Ryde residents.
However, the alien European ideology of Hitler and Mussolini largely fell on deaf ears. Despite hundreds of chairs prepared for the expected large and receptive audience, only 4 people were present on time inside the enclosure to hear the speaker begin his speech at 20:00.
3 of those at the meeting were news reporters.
After some delay, a few curious onlookers arrived, and Professor W. Boyce – dressed in a customary black shirt – addressed the meeting.

Boyce told the ‘crowd’:
“We are sometimes accused of being a foreign movement but, although fascism does not take its origins in Britain, we are a nationalistic movement willing to adopt foreign ideals.
“It is true we admire Hitler and Mussolini who have brought discipline to their own countries, but ours is a British fascism and our efforts are concentrated on building a new and better country.”
In 1940, when Winston Churchill became Prime Minister, the Blackshirts were banned and their leader Oswald Mosley detained. In 1980, Mosley died in Paris and ‘British’ Fascism pretty much died with him.

It is a hard but true fact, that if you steer to far to the left, sometimes only a sharp swing to the right can save you from a catastrophe.
I don’t know why we always have to have extremes, and, as it was, with all being given equal rights, but not a right to all come here, that balance seemed fair to all.
Now, it seems that the Government and media are trying to push the British to breaking point with the amount, and type of influx taking our homes, our money, and adding to the already broken NHS and dental burden, along with more traffic, more landfill, more energy and water and sewage, given to people who arrive illegally, and have paid, nor have their parents, NOTHING into the country, and many will only ever take out.
You said it – an already broken nhs! Government to blame for that! Shouldn’t we be trying to do something about why refugees flee their own country, risk themselves and their families? Or make the appeals process more efficient and quick – people who are judged to be part of our society can get work and others moved on?
another view point sanguinius
the UK on it current trajectory is unable to continue in existence at the current standard of society, beyond a few generations, due to the lack of replacement children being born in relation to the number of deaths.
there are two solutions – either uk born and bred residents have more kids, or more people are imported into the country.
what we are seeing with the governments plan of putting people into hotels around the country is the first stage of “population seeding” – once they are in those areas, the idea is that they will eventually live and work in those areas, which will begin to reverse the birth/death rate decline.
Another few POINTS Joe:
Firstly, with more and more jobs going in banks, as all on apps, in supermarkets, as self service, more machinery used in farming and other industries, LESS people will be needed in the future.
Secondly AI (artificial intelligence) will dramatically cut the work force in ways you can’t imagine, so LESS people needed.
Thirdly ALL these new comers will ‘age’ then what? Bring in the rest of Africa to ‘vainly hope’ that they will come here to wipe and feed the swelled aged population?
WE end up looking after many of these people for LIFE, now, funding them AND their children, many of whom will never ‘look after us’ but be a burden on society forever.
So a flawed plan, better to go hi-tech
Joe, another take is that parents in the UK are being overpaid to ‘have’ children, thus cutting the workforce available.
Not too long ago, IF you said you were going to have a child, or another child, people would say ” Best grab as much overtime as you can”
NOW, people do LESS hours, as chid tax credits makes it unviable to work more than 16 hours for a single parent (and those who pretend they are) and 20 hours for a couple.
As the wages are then made up to the same level, AND you get free or subsidised rent and c.tax, and free prescriptions.
So ONCE the imm’s realise this, they too will do likewise, ADDING to the burden, not easing it.
Joe, that is as disgusting as Hitler having a Government deliberately ‘toying’ with the breeding of a race.
Also these imports will all ‘age’ too. So you are adding to the problem, not easing it.
As we see now, many earlier arrivals choose not to work, but to become a massive, costly burden on society.
Far better to make the country hi-tech where feasible, and to use all the jobs which are going in banking, farming, shopping, etc to then do the FEWER manual labour jobs which need to be done.
As otherwise imports children will rebel, seeing their parent,( rarely parents), used by the state as new slaves, and refuse to work as the earlier Africans oft choose to do now.
A flawed policy, which WE will pay the price for not HMG
encouraged at the imf, if i am not much mistaken…
https://www.imf.org/en/Publications/fandd/issues/2020/03/can-immigration-solve-the-demographic-dilemma-peri#:~:text=The%20presence%20of%20immigrants%20helps,pressures%20in%20high%2Dfertility%20countries.
The presence of immigrants helps to keep U.S. fertility at levels closer to the replacement rate.
From the perspective of the South, policies allowing higher migration to the North would help reduce demographic pressures in high-fertility countries.
There is increasing evidence that aging societies are becoming more averse to open immigration policies, and older people have systematically more negative attitudes toward immigrants than younger people
IMF cont..
Yet the good news is that it appears that such negative attitudes are due more to generational differences than to a simple effect of “aging.” A relative lack of exposure to immigrants among the currently old generations in Europe and the United States may be the reason for such attitudes. In Europe, for instance, surveys suggest that millennials and Generation Z have more positive opinions of immigration than do older generations. As the current younger generations are exposed to more immigration, if they maintain such attitudes as they become older and see their voting power increase, they may support more open immigration policies. Then the positive demographic returns from immigration may be more fully realized.
vote it down all you like, but this is the narrative being pushed at the IMF/WEF etc
History has a nasty habit of repeating itself
Evidently, there would be a much bigger turnout if there was a rally next week.
pity somebody i know was born to late to attend,
Sadly the Island has a load of sick fascist individuals reflected in the comments on this site all too often.
Thank you IE for interesting local historical articles.
More please.
But perhaps turn off the comment section?
So YJC, ‘another’ one who know doubt supports freedom of speech, so long as it is what they want said.
Perhaps you should stick to listening to the BBC radio and TV, where all ‘comments’ are saying the ‘left’ but ‘right’ thing.
These YJC types are vile, yet they truly believe they are right in wanting to ban views which are opposite of their blinkered views.
Yet they are the first to think they are all for freedom. Clearly institutionally brainwashed.
All should have a right to a voice, even the spongers arriving daily have a right to speak their mind, before being sent back to wherever their dna swab shows they belong.
He who is scared to offend is never honest in their opinion.
So what, nobody attended and the left wing population got their way.
And now we all live in a happy world where everything works fantastically, nobody is ever offended and the government is loved by all.
It’s better than it could have been thankfully….
I bet loads of people commenting on here would go if it were rerun today…. So sad!
Sad that people have a different opinion to you? Its the left wing nonsense that people have endured for the last 80 years that have turned the tide on the way people now think. The anti fascists have become the new terror threat, protesters stuck to roads disrupting people’s lives, so many nasty crimes like robbery, rape, and murder are being committed by illegals, its no wonder more and more people are looking to the right for answers.
Just sad that so many people have such unnecessary extreme views both right and left wing. It’ll never be good for society and will just make division a bigger problem.
If you put 7 people around a table for a chat they will have a difference of opinion, So over 67 million will never agree on anything, division it seems is the only winner in our society now.
Who was that royal that was mates with the Nazi’s, met with Hitler and was side lined because there was some evidence he was spying for Germany? Ah that is right, it was the last king of England. At least the current one called Putin out for what he is back in 2014. Just hope he don’t decide to switch sides like the last one did. And if he did no way to remove him.
It’s not me.. great discussion though chaps.. have a nice day everyone
