There was no midweek action for our Isle of Wight Wessex League sides, however, on Tuesday evening flying full-back Ryan Hughes was on target for Southern League Gosport Borough in their 11-1 thrashing of Paulsgrove in the Portsmouth Senior Cup.
Hughes scored in the 40th minute with a ‘thunderbolt’ from the right-hand side of the penalty area.
Gosport Borough had 2 Isle of Wight youngsters in their starting line-up for the game against Porchester: Ryan Hughes and midfielder Jake Wright. Both teenagers were summer signings from Newport IW FC.
This weekend sees one Wessex League fixture on the Island: East Cowes Vics v Laverstock & Ford at Beatrice Avenue.
14th-placed Vics will be hoping to advance in the Wessex League 1 table after their impressive 3-4 away victory at Ash United last Saturday. The very physical Laverstock side currently lie in 9th place and lost 5-3 to Newport at Smallbrook on their last visit to the Isle of Wight.
Second-in-the-table Newport face a comparatively easy game away to bottom-of-the-table Fleet Spurs in North Hampshire. Spurs were trounced 5-0 by East Cowes Vics at Beatrice Avenue in August on the last occasion they faced an Isle of Wight side.
In the Wessex Premier, 9th-placed Cowes Sports have a winnable fixture at 2nd-from-bottom Christchurch. Earlier in the season, the Yachtsmen beat Christchurch 5-3 at home in the Hampshire Senior Cup.
