It was a busy few days at Westridge Golf Club with the staging of the Senior Championships and the August Shield.
The Senior Championship was played across Thursday and Friday (7th–8th August) and, for the 2nd time in 5 years, it was husband and wife duo Chris and Jas Royl who claimed the top honours. Both built their victories on strong opening rounds.
In the Scratch competition, Chris shot a competition-low 69 on day one to open up a 6-shot lead over Kim Meguyer (75), with Ernie Moore a further shot back on 76. In the Handicap section, Jas carded a superb net 52 – good enough for 6th place in the Scratch – to lead by 4 from Martyn Wakefield (56) and Moore (58).
Day two saw in-form Billy Humphries post the round of the day with a 76, moving him into 4th overall. Kim Meguyer slipped to 3rd after a tough day, with John Clenton climbing from 4th to 2nd thanks to a closing 78. Chris held his nerve to secure another Scratch title with a 79, sealing a 7-shot win.
In the Handicap standings, Clenton’s net 61 – the best of the day – propelled him to 2nd place, while Jas backed up her brilliant opening score with a 63 to take the title, Wakefield holding on to 3rd.

On Sunday (10th August) attention turned to the August Shield, an aggregate pairs Stableford competition that attracted 56 members on a calm and sunny day. Helen Whittaker – one half of last year’s winning team – partnered with Lorraine Swallow to take top spot with 69 points. They edged out Alfie Boxall and Lewis Chambers on countback after they tied on 68 points with Peter Dixcey and Melvyn Probyn. Only 5 points separated the next 9 pairs in a closely fought contest.
