The Royal Hotel in Ventnor has announced the launch of a new weekend event celebrating the life and works of Charles Dickens, taking place from 27th February to 1st March 2026.
The ‘Dickens House Party’ will pay tribute to the renowned writer’s strong ties to the Isle of Wight and The Royal itself, where Dickens stayed during a visit in 1838.
The weekend will be hosted by Gerald and Ian Dickens – great-great-grandsons of Charles Dickens – marking the first time they have appeared together as hosts and performers. Their joint involvement is expected to be a major draw for fans of Dickens and literary heritage.
Guests can expect a relaxed, house-party-style programme set against the backdrop of Victorian charm and the Island’s scenery.
Friday’s events include a welcome drink and dinner in the hotel’s 2 AA Rosette Geranium Restaurant, with light-hearted readings and family stories shared by Gerald and Ian Dickens.
Saturday will begin with breakfast and a choice of morning activities. Guests can follow a self-guided Charles Dickens Trail or attend an informal introduction to Dickens on the Isle of Wight, held at the hotel. The afternoon is free for exploring Ventnor or visiting nearby attractions such as Osborne House, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Wildheart Animal Sanctuary and Ventnor Botanic Gardens. A Victorian-themed afternoon tea will also be available.
Dinner will be served by the hotel’s award-winning chefs, followed by a special performance by Gerald Dickens of his one-man show, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.
The weekend will conclude on Sunday with a farewell breakfast.
Matthew Brooks, Director of Marketing at The Royal, has said:
“We are thrilled to welcome Gerald and Ian Dickens for this exciting new event on the Isle of Wight, particularly as it marks the first time they have collaborated as hosts and performers.
Charles Dickens’ connection to The Royal and to the Isle of Wight is a treasured part of our history, and the Dickens House Party will offer guests a truly immersive experience that celebrates his life, works, and love of this beautiful island.”
