UPDATED: Firefighters, Police and ambulance crews are responding to a road traffic collision on Military Road at Freshwater this evening (Sunday).
Two fire appliances from Freshwater and Newport and a fire service officer are currently attending the incident alongside Paramedics and an ambulance officer, plus the Isle of Wight Roads Policing Unit.
Emergency services were called to the incident at 19:40.
The road has been closed in both directions at the junctions with Brook and at Afton Road.
UPDATE @ 21:20 – One male has been cut free from the wreckage of their vehicle by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service after suffering serious injuries.
The individual has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance.
Substantial damage has been caused to the small hatchback car, which was the only vehicle involved in the incident. The collision has occurred close to the entrance to Freshwater Golf Club.
The road remains closed in both directions this evening.
UPDATE @ 22:45 – Hard road closures have been put in place by Island Roads, indicating the seriousness of the incident.
The road is expected to be closed for several hours.
UPDATE @ 23:25 – It has been confirmed that one male has tragically died following this evening’s incident on Military Road.
It is understood the vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest on its wheels after hitting a verge.
Police are investigating the incident and the Collision Investigation Unit from the mainland has been requested to attend the scene. The road will remain closed overnight.
Next of kin have been informed.
UPDATE MONDAY @ 09:05 – Military Road has reopened in both directions.
The road reopened around 03:30 this morning following the conclusion of a scene examination by collision investigators.
UPDATE TUESDAY @ 12:15 – Police have confirmed a 54-year-old man has died following Sunday’s road traffic collision on Military Road.
He is yet to be formally named, however Island Echo understand the deceased to be from the Freshwater area.
Flowers have been laid in tribute at the scene.
