UPDATED: The main road between Shalfleet and Yarmouth has been closed this afternoon (Sunday) following a serious road traffic collision.
Police have closed the A3054 between The New Inn and the Horse and Groom pubs following the collision, which has resulted in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance attending the scene.
Warlands Lane, Shalfleet has also been closed, according to Island Roads. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
The road is expected to remain closed for several hours, indicating the seriousness of the incident. Southern Vectis buses will divert via Elm Lane until further notice.
UPDATE @ 17:00 – A teenager is believed to have been involved in the collision, which is being described as serious. A Blue Ford is understood to have collided with the pedestrian, who has suffered life-threatening injuries.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has now left the scene, transferring the teenage boy to a mainland hospital.
The collision occurred by the village’s bus stop.
UPDATE @ 18:45 – Island Echo understands the teenager had got off a Number 7 bus just moments before the collision occurred.
Police have cordoned off the scene whilst investigations take place.
UPDATE @ 19:50 – Main Road, Shalfleet has now reopened to traffic in both directions and Southern Vectis buses have resumed a normal service.
UPDATE @ 22:15 – Tonight it is understood the teenager involved in this afternoon’s collision has suffered a bleed on the brain and is currently undergoing treatment at Southampton General Hospital.
UPDATE MONDAY @ 12:20 – It has been confirmed this morning that a 13-year-old boy suffered a serious head injury in yesterday’s collision after being hit by a Ford Escort.
The youngster is no longer deemed to be in a life threatening condition and is stable In hospital.
