Yarmouth RNLI lifeboat was called to the aid of a young man who suffered a serious hand injury yesterday (Saturday).
Just 1 mile South of the Needles, a 70ft racing yacht reported to Solent coastguard that a 17-year-old male had trapped his right hand and needed medical assistance.
The Yarmouth lifeboat crew were alerted at 17:00 and launched the Severn class All Weather Lifeboat (ALB), Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer) and proceeded to The Needles.
At 17:15 the lifeboat arrived and transferred two first aiders on to the casualty vessel to assess the situation. With one of the yachts crew being a nurse, pain relief had already been administered and the hand was covered to control the bleeding.
The decision was made to transfer the young casualty to the lifeboat, with the rest of the yachts crew all happy. The lifeboat retuned to Yarmouth where they were met by a waiting ambulance to take the patient to St Mary’s Hospital.
