The public toilets next to Hinks Cafe on the revetment between Sandown and Shanklin have fully re-opened today (Monday), more than 16 months after they were temporarily closed. In June 2022, the public conveniences at Lake were suddenly closed due to an issue with a computer control board for the drainage system. As there is no sewer on the revetment, all waste from the toilets has to be put through a masticator and pumped up a pipe to the top of the cliff, to join the main sewer. This issue was soon fixed but then, in February last year, the pump itself failed. It took around 12 months to source a replacement part but when it was installed earlier this year it was discovered that there was another issue… A water leak on the supply to the toilet block was located and has had to be fixed. Now, after several more months of work, the toilets are back open to allow tourists and locals alike to spend a penny. Although many have already commented on the dirty state of the loos on Day 1… It’s said that access to the location, following cliff falls and repair work to the promenade, as well as incidents of anti-social behaviour and the complexity of the engineering work, have all added to the delays in re-opening, with the Parish Council mindful of the longer term vulnerability of the site. Parish Chair Paul Brading has said:
“This has been a very frustrating process and we have re-opened as soon as we can, and thank all involved in making this possible, but recognise that any future damage may result in a further closure and costs to the Parish. “It is a very vulnerable amenity in a very vulnerable location, with cleaning access limited to the start and end of the day, and we hope all users of the facility appreciate the time and resources expended to enable re-opening in time for the summer season, and ensuring the longer-term provision of this much needed utility”.
It’s thought the pump seized solid last year due to dog poo bags being flushed down the loos. Lake Parish Council took over the running of the toilets in 2016 when the Isle of Wight Council cut funding. The Parish Council also runs the toilets at New Road, which are currently being replaced.

Not a WC to be proud of, is it!!!
Ooh, let’s see your ideas! I can’t wait
A bit of rendering and a couple of tins of paint on the lower walls wouldn’t go amiss. Especially after spending £20000 for a refurbishment.
IWC dumps it’s responsibilities on Parish Councils etc so it doesn’t have to take responsibility. Be good if we could dump all our bad stuff on someone else!. Still why shut 16mths ?, water leak easy fix, commercial macerator pump off shelf ( Dual Pump Macerator Pumping Station (2400ltr) Up to 48 people commercial
2000mm x 1200mm Dia
£5,444.75 (Inc Vat) -(12mths for part?) complexity of the engineering work ?. It’s a toilet not Cape Canaveral .
Good they are reopened, but some idiots will be vandalising them,if caught they should be made to clean toilets twice a day for a year .
they could have painted the outside area and tidied it up
Let me guess. Magnolia? And then the numpties would moan about the waste of money
Give you something to aim at seeing as your a p**s artist.
Waste of our money, the charity kept feral trash will smash it within days.
But as their parents all live on benefits and pay no Council tax, then it won’t bother them.
Another upbeat, edifying offering by the Quertz
Plastic qwerty strikes again!
I am surprised they are not charging 50p to use these
Sh*t houses.
Let’s hope there is CCTV monitoring the toilets, or at least the revetment.
This is good news. I remember these when they first opened, which was in 1970 I think.
The last time I used them was a couple of minutes after buying a bottle of coke from Hink’s. Unfortunately, while having a ‘jimmy’, it fell from my coat pocket and straight into the trough. For all I know it may still be there!
It’s people like you that make urinals look so disgusting and spoil it for everyone else. You should be ashamed of yourself. Pick it up for God’s sake. 🙂
How does a bottle of coke make a urinal “look disgusting”? What have I spoiled? Why should I be ashamed?
So you are one of those who expects others to clean up after you drop litter and make a mess!
Great example for your grandchildren.
The incident was about six years ago. I was hardly likely to put my hand in a trough full of stale p**s without suitable clothing. Would you? The cleaners, who do wear protective clothing, are paid to clean the toilets. So I left it to them to sort out, which would have taken them around 5 seconds. And I didn’t “make a mess”.
I find it astonishing that you can get on your high horse due to a bottle of coke being left in a toilet, when we often have toilets and other public places being wrecked by vandals.
You and ‘Isleowill’ need to get out more.
