Residents at Riverview Court in Sandown are being evacuated by the emergency services as floodwater surrounds their properties.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has firefighters from both Ryde and Newport on scene off Avenue Road, where crews are using water rescue equipment to help a number of residents evacuate their mobile homes.
Island Echo understands that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary also attended earlier this afternoon.
Photos sent to Island Echo earlier this morning, show how the water levels have stayed very high throughout the day.
Electricians have been called to isolate the power supply due to floodwater affecting the electrical cables on the park home estate, which is home to 45 dwellings.
The Isle of Wight Council has deployed several Public Realm Officers to the site.
A spokesperson for the local authority has said:
“Council staff are on site working closely with colleagues from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS).
“HIWFRS, together with SSEN, are carrying out a full risk assessment. Depending on the outcome of this assessment, it may be necessary to evacuate some of the properties.
“Plans for a suitable evacuation location are being actively developed, and further updates will be provided as soon as possible”.
I can never understand what IDIOT allowed such a
site to be allowed to have opened in such a location.
Really the residents should be paying the costs here.
This site is next to the river, on a flood plain.
The ‘old’ holiday park could accept the risk of seasonal flooding.
The moment this site was created, people should have done due dilligence before buying and walked a mile. People don’t buy houses (or shouldn’t) without doing an environmental survey, but people happily buy Caravans for permanent residence (not as an occasional holiday home) without doing any of the basics.
Perhaps they could elevate the height of each of the Caravans to take them above the 100 year flood height and move their cars to the Avenue Road carpark when a floodrisk is declared.
Alternatively – perhaps they should buy houseboats?
House boats would be the perfect choice.
Not surprised at all. There was a massive flood there in 2007 so nothing has been learnt and yet they still put homes on flood plains !!
