RESCUE TEAMS WORK TO RECOVER BODY

bodymapUPDATED: Emergency services are this afternoon (Sunday) recovering a body found floating in the English Channel south of St Catherine’s Point.

HM Coastguard and Police were alerted to the discovery earlier today prompting Rescue 104 helicopter to be deployed to the area, approximately 15 miles off of the Island’s coastline.

Island Echo understand a passing vessel spotted the body before alerting the authorities.

rnlibembridgeBembridge RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat has also been sent to the scene, assisting ‘Commander’ from Hampshire Constabulary’s Marine Unit.

The identity of the body discovered today is currently unknown, however Police and HM Coastguard are keeping an open mind, conducting a search of the area to establish that there have been no further casualties.

Less than two weeks ago Elroy Fernandes, 33, jumped overboard from a MSC Cruise ship however despite a thorough search, Mr Fernandes was not located and is still missing.

UPDATE @ 16:00 – It has been confirmed this afternoon that Bembridge RNLI were tasked at 11:30 this morning to rendezvous with a yacht that had discovered a deceased person in the English Channel. Using the Y boat & transom platform to successfully recover the body from the water, the volunteer crew transferred the body bag to the Police boat ‘Commander’, which then met with ambulance crews in Portsmouth Harbour.

While returning from the scene this afternoon, Bembridge was re-tasked to assist 15ft dinghy with 3 anglers broken down off of Bembridge Ledge. The All Weather Lifeboat towed the yacht into Bembridge Harbour before returning to station.
