Mainland man Callum Hickman, who led Police on a dangerous high-speed pursuit in a vehicle he’d only just purchased, has been labelled a ‘dreadful driver’ and jailed for 14 months.
Hickman, of Princes Court, Northam in Southampton, previously admitted a charge of dangerous driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court back in May. Appearing at the Isle of Wight Crown Court today (Friday), full details of the 26-year-old labourer’s offending were divulged to the court.
Prosecutor Tim Devlin explained to the court that on the morning of 4th August 2024, a Citroen C3 flagged ANPR cameras as being driven without an MOT and insurance. Hickman is said to have ‘panicked’ when he saw Police and instead of stopping, decided to drive off, leading officers on a chase from Whippingham to Newport.
Shocking dashcam footage played to the courtroom showed Hickman driving dangerously on numerous local roads, including driving down Fairlee Road – one of the busiest roads on the Island – at speeds in excess of 70mph.
Hickman entered both Racecourse and Barton Manor Roundabout on the wrong side of the road, narrowly missing numerous cars driving on the correct side of the carriageway. The 26-year-old was seen driving up Medina Way – the dual carriageway – on the wrong side of the road before dumping the car on Riverway and making off on foot towards Hookes Way.
Throughout the chase, other road users were forced to undertake emergency stop manoeuvres as Hickman weaved his way in and out of traffic. At points the chase was so dangerous Police had to stand down.
Mr Devlin told the court that Hickman had a total of 41 convictions for 125 offences on his record, including numerous previous convictions for dangerous driving – the most recent of which earned him a 16-month prison sentence.
Hickman had only come to the Island to purchase the French motor.
Defending, Hannah Tickle said that although the footage in the case showed an ‘egregious disregard for public welfare’, Hickman intended to comply with whatever requirements were imposed on him.
Ms Tickle said that her client panicked because he was scared of going back to prison.
In sentencing, Judge James Newton-Price told Callum Hickman he could’ve easily killed anyone of the motorists and that the case was so serious a custodial sentence was ‘inevitable’.
Hickman, who is expecting the birth of his first child, was handed an immediate 14-month prison sentence. He was also banned from driving for a total of 43 months.
Is that it? Yeah like he’s not going to drive even though he’s banned! If he’s gonna be a father grow up you stupid idiot! Could be one day your baby/ kid could be involved in an incident with a reckless driver, think about it, you could have killed people with your lack of care for other human life!!!
Great news, let’s hope more speeding Numpty’s
are caught.
It is high time the courts started routinely ordering the car to be crushed in such cases. I am sure it would have an impact.
I have been saying for ages speeding on the
Island is rife.
Something seriously needs to be done about
it before someone gets killed.
I totally agree with you Marcus. Take their toys away from them, like you would with a naughty child, because this twat seems to have the mind of a backward child.
Finally, someone actually getting prison time!!!
Not enough prison time. This bastard should be birched.
Bringing back the birch for such Numpty’s would be ideal.
And they want to make it difficult for the older ones to stay driving. IT’S NOT US WHO ARE DRIVING LIKE TWATS, it’s just that we are easy targets to victimize
Us old ones have experience and know right from
wrong when driving, not like these immature
uneducated Numpty’s.
Poor child. Excuse for a human being and father. Will set a great example.
You can always tell a Numpty
look for their Vape.
The country is full of grown up Numpty’s
going around blowing their vape fumes everywhere.
Why don’t they grow up, take a trip to the Steam Railway and
buy a £5 bubble machine from the Works.
Much cheaper and healthier in the long run and we don’t have
to breathe in their germs!
Or is it they want to be babies again sucking on their
Vape dummies.
Goo, Goo, Ga, Ga
Lol
Always worse when it’s a French motor…..
He could have killed someone. Stupid man
Should have been a longer sentence for the damage
he could have done,
14 months? About time this man-child was caged for good. Looks like a lost 12-year-old. All bark, no brain.
And his girlfriend? Laughing, bragging, pregnant. Fantastic. The walking advert for birth control now breeding. That kid’s doomed before it’s born. She doesn’t need attention, she needs a lobotomy!
That child doesn’t stand a chance. With parents like that, what hope is there? It’s not going to be raised – it’s going to be dragged up, taught that crime is normal, that respect is weakness, and that accountability is optional.
Another generation thrown into the fire before it even takes its first breath, all because we let wasters breed.
You got it right there.
Once a bad apple, always a bad apple.
