37-year-old Cheryl Maitland – a mum of 5 from Newport – has been banned from driving after being caught over the drink-drive limit in Yarmouth last month.
Maitland, of Maple Drive, appeared before Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Friday 1st August where she admitted a single charge of drink driving.
The court heard how Police stopped Maitland at around 15:00 on 3rd July while she was driving a blue Renault Scenic close to the Wightlink car ferry terminal on Quay Street, Yarmouth.
Officers had reason to suspect she had been drinking and carried out a roadside breath test, which she failed. She was arrested and taken to Newport Police Station, where a further evidential test confirmed she had 56 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – well above the legal limit of 35.
Maitland works as a prison officer at HMP Isle of Wight.
In addition to disqualifying her from driving for 15 months, Magistrates imposed a £623 fine, ordered her to pay £85 in prosecution costs, and applied a £249 victim surcharge.
You cannot make this sh*t up.
A person is employed in the prison service,
yet they themselves do not know right from wrong.

She is obviously use to prison life, so it’s a good
time for her to switch roles and enjoy Porridge.
Drink driving kills innocent people, there are NO
excuses.
Not for one moment do I defend or condone drink driving but this was a single charge of drink driving with a not particularly high reading. She has been relieved of nearly £1,000 and banned for 15 months. In the same edition we have a report of someone already on a community service order for drug driving who received no further community sentence, a 16 month ban and was relieved of £85. I think it is perverse to suggest the prison officer got off lightly. And what good would it do to take away her employment? That is just plain stupid as she will never afford to pay what has been ordered.
How can you employ a person who is working
in an institution that is meant to help persons
who break the law.
Imagine employing a Doctor who harms patients
or a vet who harms animals etc etc
I agree with your comment about the lenient drug
sentence.
It seems that the system fines persons more who are
in employment them those on benefits.
The whole system needs reviewing.
