Godshill Primary School has been temporarily closed due to the strong smell of gas in and around the building – although it is thought the smell is emanating from a vessel moored in The Bay.
The closure comes amid wider reports of a gas-like odour across The Bay area. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has confirmed that the likely source is a vessel venting gas.
SGN has stated there are no issues with the local gas network at this time. However, as a precaution, the decision has been made to close the school while investigations continue.
The Isle of Wight Council’s schools team is managing the situation locally. Confirmation is still awaited from SGN as to whether the smell at the school is directly linked to the vessel.
UPDATE @ 16:37 – Following a series of checks carried out by SGN earlier today, the school site has been confirmed as safe. Godshill Primary School will reopen as normal tomorrow.

Why don’t people wait to see what the problem is before they all make assumptions?
