UPDATED: An overnight power cut is still affecting residents and businesses on the outskirts of Newport this morning (Wednesday).

At just before 02:30 power was lost to properties in the Carisbrooke and Middle Road areas as 70mph winds battered the Island, bringing down cables in the area.

A top wind speed of 69mph was recorded at The Needles during the early hours of this morning as Storm Aileen swept across the country, although the Island escaped any weather warnings.
