In the only 2 games to be played by Isle of Wight Wessex League sides this afternoon (Saturday), winless Newport and East Cowes Victoria venture across the Solent in search of 3 points to kickstart their respective league campaigns.
In Wessex Division 1, Port travel to North Hampshire to face league leaders Whitchurch United, who have a 100% record in their 3 games this season. Last Saturday, the Jam Boys trounced United Services Portsmouth 9-0.
Newport – who start the season with 5 successive away games – are on a run of 3 defeats. Port started their league campaign with a 3-1 defeat at Ash United, following which they lost 2-1 at Bournemouth Poppies in the Hampshire Senior Cup, before going down 4-1 at Romsey Town last Saturday.
Port manager Joe Butcher says of his side’s prospects at Whitchurch:
“It’ll be a tough game I think, they look to be the side that might be having a go this year budget wise. We need to cut some errors out of our performances all over the pitch, and if we do that we’ll have a chance.”
In the Wessex Premier, East Cowes Victoria travel to Wiltshire to face Downton.
The Robins have had a victory and a defeat in their season to date; Vics have drawn their sole Wessex Premier fixture so far.
The East Cowes side were set to face Alton in the Hampshire Senior Cup at Beatrice Avenue on Tuesday; however, Alton were unable to raise a team, giving Vics a walkover win.
Cowes Sports are without a competitive fixture today.
The Yachtsmen currently lie 4th in the Wessex Premier table with 2 wins in 2 games.
On Tuesday, Cowes advanced to the first round of the Hampshire Senior Cup by beating Tadley Calleva at the Zilch Waste Stadium courtesy of two 2nd half goals from Scott McFarlane.
This Tuesday (19th August), the Yachtsmen face Eversley & California at home in the next round of the Hampshire Cup competition.
